We are looking for a Data Scientist with a passion for agriculture and a proven track record of solving complex problems. As a Data Scientist, you will be responsible for managing a team of Data Scientists developing and applying analytical and machine learning solutions to various agricultural challenges. You will work with large spatial-temporal datasets, standard analytical packages, and financial instruments to optimize supply, demand, and marketing strategies. You will also communicate your findings and recommendations to local and global stakeholders.

Essential functions: 

  • Develop predictive models: Use statistical, econometric, and machine learning tools to analyze large-scale internal and public commodity-related data. This includes estimating supply, demand, and price models based on sound theory, subject-matter knowledge, and best-practice programming techniques. 

  • Analyze weather datasets: Transform and analyze large-scale raster and vectorized global weather datasets such as GFS for various analytical purposes. 

  • Create dashboards and custom tools: Develop dashboards and custom tools to deploy findings to commercial groups using latest tools and technologies. 

  • Present findings: Present findings to broad commercial groups and effectively summarize and communicate model features and results for global risk management. 

  • Contribute to database construction: Contribute to the construction and maintenance of internal databases and Python libraries. 

  • Build high-quality models: Build high-quality statistical, economic, and machine learning models on demand using state-of-the-art analytical tools. Clearly explain assumptions, model advantages, and limitations. 

To be successful in this role, you should have the following qualifications: 

  • Must have a minimum 5 years of agriculture/commodity industry experience in data science, analytics, or related fields. 

  • Degree in data science, statistics, computer science, or similar (advanced degree is a plus) 

  • Strong leadership and management skills. You should be able to motivate, coach, and guide your team to achieve high performance and quality standards. You should also be able to foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning within your team and across the organization. 

  • Excellent programming skills in Python or a similar language. You should be able to create functions, classes, modules, and packages using best practices and standards. 

  • Expertise in data science tools and techniques. You should be proficient in programming languages such as Python, SQL, etc. You should also be familiar with data science frameworks and libraries such as Pandas, Numpy, Geopandas, Scikit-learn, etc. You should also be able to apply advanced statistical, machine learning, and optimization methods to solve complex business problems. 

  • Ability to handle large spatial-temporal datasets. You should be able to work with geospatial data, time series data, and other types of data that have spatial and temporal dimensions. You should also be able to apply appropriate methods and techniques to analyze and model such data. 

  • Good understanding of concepts related to supply/demand/marketing in agriculture. You should be familiar with publicly-available agricultural datasets such as USDA, FAO, etc. You should also have some knowledge of financial instruments and or commodity markets related to agriculture. 

  • Intellectually creative, willing to share knowledge, adaptive to new techniques. You should be able to generate novel and innovative ideas, collaborate with others, and learn from feedback. You should also be open to exploring new techniques and methods to improve your skills and results. 

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills. You should be able to communicate complex data concepts and insights clearly and effectively to various audiences, both technical and non-technical. You should also be able to present your findings and recommendations in a compelling and persuasive manner. 

This is a supervisory position. 

Position is hybrid 3 days a week. No remote work.
