A snapshot of LDC\u2019s journey in a country that is dreaming big.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With its 3.4 million inhabitants and four times as many cows, Uruguay is\nsometimes described as “one big farm” – so it\u2019s no surprise that farming\nis the country\u2019s most important economic activity, with agriculture and agri-industry accounting\nfor 12% of GDP, and about 70% of total exports.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has been almost 20 years since LDC\u2019s story began in Uruguay, where we have\nbecome one of Uruguay\u2019s leading agro-industrial companies and see opportunities\nto continue to grow with the country\u2019s important agricultural sector. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A<\/strong> small\nagricultural dynamo between South American giants.<\/strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agriculture has always been the main economic engine of\nUruguay, whose geography and temperate climate are ideal to grow a variety of\nwinter and summer crops, and where deep-water ports facilitate agile production\nexports to the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While relatively small compared to neighboring Argentina\nand Brazil, the country\u2019s producers have stayed at the forefront of new agricultural\ntechnologies: from the early adoption of no-till farming, to their openness to biotechnology\nand investment in irrigation systems. And as the government has legally\nenforced the responsible use and maintenance of soils, production is managed with\ncare for natural resources, making this a sustainable activity that transcends\ngenerations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

All this represents, without a doubt, an attraction for a\ncompany like ours, which places such emphasis on the sustainable production of\nthe goods we market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Working\nfrom solid foundations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

LDC entered the Uruguayan market in 2002, recognizing the\ncountry\u2019s fit with the company\u2019s core activity to meet customer demand for\nagricultural products around the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our global expertise and network, which includes important\noilseed crushing plants in the region, combined with our local team\u2019s deep\nunderstanding of producers\u2019 needs, were key to establish LDC as a key player in\nUruguay. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, we hold 30% of the domestic market share for grains\nand oilseeds, through LDC\u2019s five commercial offices in the country\u2019s main\nagricultural areas, two grains and oilseeds elevators, a fertilizer warehouse\nand activities in all of Uruguay\u2019s main exporting ports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LDC has also benefitted from Uruguay\u2019s solid state institutions, policies and regulations, which promote investments in agriculture and professional services. The country being a regional leader in this area, LDC has positioned itself as an important employer – both at its own facilities, including several industrial assets, a center of expertise for international execution and a shared services center, and at those managed with local partners, including warehousing and port operations throughout the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

LDC\u2019s presence in Uruguay strategically complements our\norigination and industrial activities in Argentina and Paraguay, as our\nprocessing plants and fluvial freight company enable us to transport products on\nthe Paran\u00e1 and Paraguay rivers – among the three countries and beyond, to the\nworld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Connected\nwith global consumer trends.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

LDC\u2019s strategy involves increasing vertical integration, diversification through value-added products, as well as investments in innovation. As we pursue this strategy, we are forming partnerships to accelerate growth in consumer markets – for instance in China, through our joint venture to produce high-end feed for aquaculture<\/a>, to meet the country\u2019s demand for fish as a popular protein alternative to meat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we move further downstream, closer to end-consumers, we\nalso need to secure the significant strength that is our ability to source the\nagricultural products that are essential ingredients for food and feed,\nincluding grains, oilseeds and others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Continuing to reinforce our efficiency and capacity in key\norigination countries is therefore essential \u2013 including in Uruguay, where we\nsupport and work closely with farmers, whose productivity and resilience is\nfundamental to our success and to long-term food security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opportunities\nto lead on sustainable, traceable supply chains. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Customers are increasingly concerned about food safety and sustainability, a trend accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic, with food, feed and ingredient industries increasingly requiring guarantees of compliance with safety and sustainability standards in all our activities: production, merchandizing, processing, transportation and – increasingly – packaging and distribution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

As we increase our presence across the value chain, it is crucial that we do so with a commitment to create fair and sustainable value at every step of the journey: from producer to end-consumer. LDC is already working in that sense – for instance by driving soy supply chain transparency, as part of our global Soy Sustainability Policy<\/a> commitments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We see great potential for Uruguay to differentiate its products through traceability. Having been the first country to enable full supply chain traceability for bovine production<\/a>, leveraging new technologies, why not do the same for its agricultural products, which comply with sustainable soil management laws?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
