financial markets were temporarily disrupted due to the Covid-19 pandemic, 2020 saw significant increases in commitments by financial investors and the banking community on environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) related issues.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<p>For example, total assets under management signed onto the <em>United&nbsp;Nations<\/em>\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unpri.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Principles for Responsible Investment<\/a> (PRI) increased by US$17 trillion (or 20%) to over US$103 trillion in total, which is the largest annual increase since the PRI\u2019s inception in 2006.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting in 2019, LDC began to incorporate sustainability targets into its committed financing facilities.\u202f As the investment community continues to align incentives for environmental integrity and accountability, LDC is committed to adopting new targets and sustainability-linked principles in its funding strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pursuing our journey to further connect our environmental performance with how\u202fwe finance our company,\u202fearly in 2020 we introduced\u202fa major new initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\u202fJanuary, LDC signed a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/stories-insights\/loan-agreement-with-ebrd-for-sustainable-expansion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new US$100 million facility<\/a> with the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>European Bank for Reconstruction and Development<\/em><\/a>\u202fto support the\u202fsustainable\u202fexpansion of operations in Bulgaria, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Poland, Romania, Tajikistan, Turkey and Ukraine, while reinforcing corporate governance to address climate change risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result,\u202fmany small and medium-sized farmers\u202facross these eight countries have\u202fincreased\u202faccess to markets\u202fand knowledge-sharing programs &#8211; including on management of risks arising from climate change\u202f- and\u202fare receiving\u202ftraining on modern agronomic practices to improve the quality of their produce sustainably.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<p>The agreement also provides for LDC\u2019s adoption of an enhanced climate corporate governance approach in line with the guidelines of the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fsb-tcfd.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Financial Stability Board\u2019s\u202fTask Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures<\/em><\/a>, which support voluntary disclosure\u202fof climate-related financial risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This includes\u202fthe development of new tools for climate-related risk management, and climate scenario stress-testing of grain harvests in Ukraine and cotton harvests in Turkey.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These tests will generate experience and data that reinforces our understanding of climate change impacts on various supply chains, and therefore our ability to support farmers and suppliers in mitigating these.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we move forward in 2021, LDC will seek to embed more sustainability-linked financing initiatives within a new ESG framework, which we are developing to drive positive change in relation to a wide range of global environmental, social and corporate governance issues.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n
