Summary
Lead plant proteins pilot projects to achieve both near term company objectives and long-term strategic initiatives
• Lead process/product CAPEX and OPEX cost modeling to guide project prioritization and scale-up recommendations
• Guide process development & optimization of pilot to large scale milling, homogenization, centrifugation, tangential flow filtration, freezing and drying
• Work with the Product Quality team to ensure process changes result in product that meets specifications
• Collaborate with Downstream Processing Research and Intermediate-Scale Process Development teams to scale-up identified process improvements to pilot and communicate pilot findings that require further scale-down investigation and optimization
• Review manufacturing-scale data to identify opportunities for improvement and work with process engineers to execute relevant pilot trials
• Synthesize data across pilot trials, identify trends and perform statistical analysis.
• Challenge industry standards and tailor solutions to what is needed in the short term and long term to advance our mission
• Mentorship and possible supervisory responsibilities of junior engineers
• Manage external vendors, third-party collaborators to deliver technical solutions
• Direct experience with protein biotechnological processes & product recoveries, pilot-scale equipment, project management and downstream process scale-up and troubleshooting, demonstrated subject matter expertise in one or multiple downstream separation technologies
• Self-motivated individual with good organization skills
• Ability to continuously establish and maintain excellent record keeping, inventory, and accountability
• Ability to work with, influence and lead a diverse, dynamic team effectively
• Must be willing to work in and comply with commercial-scale manufacturing, food GMP environments
• Knowledge of safety regulations including CIP protocols for pilot plant operations
• An analytical approach and a results-oriented problem solver
• Good people skills and are a hands-on individual
• Six sigma green/black belt and knowledge of DOE preferred
• Knowledge of HACCP & FSMA requirements
• Knowledge of mistake-proofing and PLC programming is desirable
• Ability to manage multiple priorities or projects simultaneously and keep them progressing to completion
• English (Fluent)
• PhD in chemical engineering, biochemistry or related fields and 8+ additional years of experience in protein process development or 12+ years’ experience in the absence of a PhD
