Overall Purpose and Objective of Position

The primary purpose of the job is the management of plant utilities, including steam boilers, air compressors, nitrogen generators, wells, and fire systems.  The Utilities Supervisor also manages the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP), and is responsible for maintaining appropriate chemical raw material inventories for the boiler, biodiesel,  glycerin areas of the site.

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions

  • Manages daily performance of the WWTP and boiler team to achieve or exceed company objectives
  • Completes regular checks of WWTP and Utilities staff and equipment to ensure that standard operating procedures are followed and company standards are met
  • Maintains proper coverage by managing the WWTP and Utilities staffing schedule
  • Insures that housekeeping standards for WWTP and Utilities are developed, communicated, and followed
  • Manages engineering projects effectively
  • Keeps track of biodiesel, glycerin, boiler, and WWTP supplies and chemicals and places requisitions as required
  • Makes improvements to the WWTP and Utilities processes as necessary to maximize efficiency, increase product quality, and lower costs
  • Responds to WWTP and Utilities issues or alarms and leads investigations as necessary
  • Collects, records and analyzes WWTP and Utilities data to optimize efficiencies and product quality
  • Notifies the Biodiesel Superintendent of potential safety hazards, equipment failures, operational inconsistencies and employee incidents
  • Reports any WWTP and Utilities equipment issues to maintenance staff
  • Is an active member of the facility SHE Program 
  • Maintains good working knowledge of SHE policies, rules and procedures applicable to areas of responsibility and ensures all applicable requirements are adhered to and reporting and testing requirements are met.
  • Ensures employees are provided necessary training

 

Additional Responsibilities

  • Delivers job-related training to WWTP and Utilities staff to increase efficiency and safety
  • Coaches staff on the company’s performance expectations and provides ongoing performance feedback
  • Accepts and carries out other duties as assigned
  • Serves as the site Energy Conservation Champion

 

 

Education/Professional Certifications/Licenses

Basic qualification:

  • High school diploma or equivalent


Preferred qualifications:

Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or related field

  • Certified Wastewater Treatment Operator

 

Experience

Basic qualification:

  • Three years of supervisory/management experience in an industrial setting - Soybean processing or Biodiesel industry experience.

Proven track record of successfully implementing effective production processes

Preferred qualification:

  • Utility  Supervisor experience  ( Boiler and Waste Water treatment Plant operation)

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (including any physical demands)

Basic qualifications:

  • General knowledge of continuous processing operations
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
    Proficiency with spreadsheet and word processing software, (e.g., Excel and MS Word).
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders as well as work at extended heights; manage confined space entry, withstand extended periods of walking and standing; move manufacturing materials, products and equipment of 50 pounds or more which requires bending and lifting. 

Preferred qualifications:

  • General knowledge of steam boiler and related utility operations
  • Knowledge waste water treatment operations
  • Knowledge of the regulatory requirements the facility operates under (e.g., OSHA, EPA, USDA) 
  • Knowledge of ISO 9000 and BQ-9000

Working Conditions

  • Interior office work is in a typical climate-controlled office environment.  Frequent visits to industrial operations areas are necessary with exposure to variety of temperatures and prevailing weather conditions.  Regular exposure to gases, vapors, dust, odors and flammable liquids.  Occasional exposure to areas with wet floors and high noise.  Some stair climbing and heaving lifting is required.  Work is sometimes above ground level.  Extensions of regular working hours are occasionally necessary to complete time-sensitive projects or to respond to emergencies.

Employee Supervision

  • This position supervises a team of 6 - 10 plant operations personnel.  Has the authority to recommend hiring, firing, & discipline of employees as well as supervise, manage, & direct work.

Decision Making/Accountability

  • Plans and controls the WWTP and Utilities processes for a soybean crushing and biodiesel plant.  Accountable for monitoring and maintaining appropriate chemical inventories for utilities, WWTP, biodiesel, and glycerin areas of the plant.  Plans and allocates the work of plant operations personnel to meet facility needs and production goals.  Investigates and resolves any process, equipment and personnel issues.

Safety, Health & Environmental Responsibilities

  • Maintains good working knowledge of SHE policies, rules and procedures applicable to area of responsibility and ensures all applicable requirements are adhered to.  Ensures employees are provided required training for area and jobs and tasks prior to assigning work.  Ensures area of responsibility is maintained in orderly and safe manner.  Promptly reports unsafe working conditions to management and communicates potential hazards to affected employees.  Promptly reports all incidents to management and conducts incident investigation as soon as practicable; no later than 24 hours from time of incident.
