The overall purpose of the position is to identify opportunities, contribute insights and add value through (i) sound and informed application of tax laws and (ii) cross functional collaboration with colleagues. The state and local tax (“SALT”) manager’s objective is the sound management of the North American SALT position including U.S. and Canadian compliance, planning, audits and system integration. 

*This position is required to be in the office 4 days a week*

 

Responsibilities:

Compliance

  • Ensure effective management, review and assistance with the preparation of all SALT returns, ensuring completeness, accuracy and timeliness within the following disciplines:  

-Income

-Excise (motor fuel)

-Property (real and personal)

-Canadian GST / PST

-Commercial feed, seed and fertilizer

-Sales and Use

-Unclaimed property

  • Prepare and review analysis to support income tax provisions and preparation of estimated payments.
  • Manage all SALT tax audits.

Research and planning

  • Research tax laws to ensure compliance and reduce risks.
  • Identify and implement tax planning strategies to reduce or mitigate tax.
  • Collaborate with tax, finance, business development, and commercial teams to obtain SALT credits and other incentives.
  • Partner with cross functional teams to identify licensing needs in new and existing jurisdictions.

Process improvement

  • Continually develop, improve and streamline processes and procedures for SALT tax return preparation.
  • Assist with the automation of tax systems by driving innovation.

Supervision

  • Manage, support and develop tax staff toward technical growth and leadership.

Collaboration

  • Support North American and global tax departments with diverse and challenging initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance the overall LDC tax position through critical evaluation and identification of solutions.

 

 

Education/Professional Certifications/Licenses

Basic qualification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business related discipline

 

Experience

Basic qualification:

  • 8+ years of tax experience, in public accounting and / or corporate tax department 

Preferred qualification:

  • Preference to individuals with previous supervisory responsibility.
  • Preference to individuals with previous experience dealing with state and federal departments of revenue including resolution of issues and audits.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of SALT

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (including any physical demands)

Basic qualifications:

  • Ability to work independently to problem solve.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize multiple tasks to accommodate strict monthly deadlines.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Adobe, SharePoint
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical skills 
  • Strong documentation skills
  • Strong attention to details

 

Preferred qualification:

  • Knowledge of SAP
