{"id":4013,"date":"2020-05-08T10:04:09","date_gmt":"2020-05-08T08:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/hn\/stories-insights\/protecting-the-future-of-coffee-in-brazil-and-colombia\/"},"modified":"2023-05-23T23:59:02","modified_gmt":"2023-05-23T21:59:02","slug":"protecting-the-future-of-coffee-in-brazil-and-colombia","status":"publish","type":"stories-insight","link":"https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/hn\/en\/stories-insights\/protecting-the-future-of-coffee-in-brazil-and-colombia\/","title":{"rendered":"Protecting the Future of Coffee in Brazil and Colombia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p> E<em>mpowering farmers   and training students, toward sustainable coffee production for future   generations<\/em>   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Securing a sustainable supply of coffee for coffee lovers everywhere is important to us \u2013 and this means empowering coffee farming communities and protecting the environment in which coffee grows.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With climate change affecting coffee yields, and younger generations struggling to see a profitable future in farming, coffee supplies are at risk.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Helping to secure farmers\u2019 livelihoods in coffee-growing countries through sustainable means is therefore key to ensuring a fair and sustainable supply of coffee for the long-term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"819\" height=\"864\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/hn\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/Coffee-Agronomist-teaching-in-field.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6886\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/hn\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/Coffee-Agronomist-teaching-in-field.jpg 819w, https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/hn\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/Coffee-Agronomist-teaching-in-field-284x300.jpg 284w, https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/hn\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/Coffee-Agronomist-teaching-in-field-768x810.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/hn\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/Coffee-Agronomist-teaching-in-field-436x460.jpg 436w, https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/hn\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/Coffee-Agronomist-teaching-in-field-389x410.jpg 389w, https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/hn\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/Coffee-Agronomist-teaching-in-field-694x732.jpg 694w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2019, we have been working on this\nwith the <em>Louis Dreyfus Foundation,<\/em>\nand with rural schools and farming cooperatives in Brazil and Colombia, by\ntraining farmers and students in more sustainable and profitable coffee farming\ntechniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Designed to show students the benefits of sustainable coffee farming, the training curriculum focuses on topics such as soil management for improved fertility, pollution and waste management, responsible use of agrochemicals, post-harvest best practices, and much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <em>\u201cMy objectives and dreams are to learn how to taste coffee in a correct way, and to have my own dryer for the post-harvest process, as well as all the equipment for coffee production,\u201d says Yofren, a student in Colombia. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And what about after the coffee beans leave the farm?
