{"id":3140,"date":"2020-07-15T09:11:24","date_gmt":"2020-07-15T07:11:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/stories-insights\/passing-on-skills-to-tomorrows-farmers\/"},"modified":"2023-05-23T18:23:58","modified_gmt":"2023-05-23T16:23:58","slug":"passing-on-skills-to-tomorrows-farmers","status":"publish","type":"stories-insight","link":"https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/en\/stories-insights\/passing-on-skills-to-tomorrows-farmers\/","title":{"rendered":"Passing on Skills to Tomorrow\u2019s Farmers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>LDC depends on farmers around the world, to fulfill its role\nas a leading merchant and processor of agricultural goods, which comes with a\nduty to help feed and clothe the world\u2019s growing population in a safe and sustainable\nway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To ensure the resilience of these farming communities, whose\ncontribution is key to food security globally, we partner with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.louisdreyfusfoundation.org\/\"><em>Louis Dreyfus Foundation<\/em><\/a> to advance sustainable micro-farming through\neducational projects that share good agricultural practices with young people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, two new projects began to empower young talents to\nbuild a sustainable professional future in agriculture for themselves, with indirect\nbenefits for their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In collaboration with the local government and French agri-agency\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fert.fr\/en\/\"><em>Fert<\/em><\/a>,\nwe opened a vocational agricultural school in C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire, <em>Centre de Formation Agricole et Rurale <\/em>(CFAR),\nwhich welcomed 32 students in 2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/FERT-11-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4530\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/FERT-11-scaled.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/FERT-11-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/FERT-11-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/FERT-11-670x377.jpg 670w, https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/FERT-11-560x315.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/FERT-11-750x422.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn a country where nearly 60% of the population is under 25\nyears old, giving young people access to quality education is essential to\neconomic development,\u201d explains Robert Serpollet, General Manager of the <em>Louis Dreyfus Foundation. \u201c<\/em>All our\neducational projects are connected with agriculture, as a key driver for the\ndevelopment, resilience and food security of local communities. And inversely,\nrecognizing that an educational dimension is essential to building capacity for\nsustainable self-sufficiency, training is also central to our micro-farming\nprojects.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CFAR offers a two-year program that combines theoretical and\npractical training, with particular focus on sustainable agriculture practices\nand environmental preservation. The curriculum covers general topics like mathematics,\ncomputer science and economics as well as vocational skills such as agronomy,\nsoil science, crop and livestock production, and farm management. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First-year student Aly already sees a path to his future: \u201cI\nsee the importance of managing a farm: how to manage it, take good care of the\nanimals and sell them. We are also studying profitability, and I realize that\nraising chickens is an activity that can quickly earn money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To move into their second year, students must complete an\ninternship to acquire practical experience that will facilitate entry to the\nprofessional market after graduation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/FERT-10-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4527\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/FERT-10-scaled.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/FERT-10-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/FERT-10-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/FERT-10-670x377.jpg 670w, https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/FERT-10-560x315.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/FERT-10-750x422.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Samuel,\none of the CFAR trainers, sees the benefits of providing boarding for students:\n\u201cHere the children do not have the worry about food and accommodation, so they\ncan fully focus on their training. They practice crop cultivation and livestock\nbreeding daily with a team that is dedicated and available to them; it\u2019s the\nperfect setting for training.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ludovic\nM\u2019Bahia Ble, Country Manager for C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire at LDC, was actively involved in\nthe project: \u201cKnowing the context in northern C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire and the challenges\nfacing the local population, I was happy to coordinate project implementation\non the ground. CFAR is a potential change-maker for the Poro region, and was created\nto help its communities to flourish.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\n2020, 35 new students will join CFAR, while existing students will complete\ninternships in farms before moving into their second year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"498\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/Argentina_CEREC-school_School-Management-and-Gustavo-1024x498.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4529\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/Argentina_CEREC-school_School-Management-and-Gustavo-scaled.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/Argentina_CEREC-school_School-Management-and-Gustavo-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/Argentina_CEREC-school_School-Management-and-Gustavo-768x373.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/Argentina_CEREC-school_School-Management-and-Gustavo-670x326.jpg 670w, https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/Argentina_CEREC-school_School-Management-and-Gustavo-560x272.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/Argentina_CEREC-school_School-Management-and-Gustavo-750x364.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Across\nthe world, in a small community of Argentina\u2019s Chaco province, LDC and the <em>Louis Dreyfus Foundation<\/em> support local\nagricultural school <em>CEREC<\/em>, which\nteaches agricultural techniques, sustainable production methods and\nagri-entrepreneurship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second-year\nstudent, Nelson, has acquired many new skills that he can see paying off for\nhim later: \u201cI learned how long it takes to grow a plant and when it bears fruit;\nI saw how a tractor works and what functions it performs. The project has had a\npositive impact for me, as the knowledge I am getting now will allow me to produce\ngoods in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nparallel, the school\u2019s food production helps feed attending students, with\nsurplus sold at local markets to generate additional income to finance the\nschool\u2019s activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\n2019, the <em>Louis Dreyfus Foundation<\/em>\u2019s\ngrant made it possible for the school to set up poultry and goat farms, as well\nas fruit and vegetable production, managed by teachers and students. The\nschool\u2019s beehives were repaired and upgraded, while irrigation was secured by\nrestoring the existing water well and drip irrigation system. Refurbishments\nwere carried out by students\u2019 family members, creating employment for the local\ncommunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/Picture2-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4528\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/Picture2-scaled.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/Picture2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/Picture2-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/Picture2-670x377.jpg 670w, https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/Picture2-560x315.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.ldc.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/Picture2-750x422.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>CEREC<\/em> director, Rufino, said he had seen\nthe project change students\u2019 lives for the better in many aspects, from academic\nperformance to interpersonal relationships, and notes \u201cthe enthusiasm of the community:\nwhen the project came to life, parents and alumni were both motivated and\nsurprised by this new sense of entrepreneurship they saw in their children and\nin themselves.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, the project\u2019s local partners,\n<em>APAER<\/em> and <em>ACERCO<\/em>, continue to work with the school, providing technical\nadvice and monitoring its production. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LDC\nemployees are encouraged to support Foundation projects in any way they can,\nwhich creates significant mutual benefits for both the company and the <em>Louis Dreyfus Foundation<\/em>. \u201cThe\nFoundation gains access to LDC\u2019s expertise, while Foundation funding multiplies\nthe scale of LDC efforts, as we work together toward shared sustainability,\nfood security and community empowerment goals in locations where the company\noperates,\u201d says Guy Hogge, Global Head of Sustainability at LDC.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LDC depends on farmers around the world, to fulfill its role as a leading merchant and processor of agricultural goods, which comes with a duty to help feed and clothe the world\u2019s growing population in a safe and sustainable way.
