With about 2,000 beneficiaries and 195,000 trees planted, our agroforestry project in Ethiopia with the Louis Dreyfus Foundation<\/a> and PUR Proje<\/a>t has the wind in its sails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 2014, regenerating coffee ecosystems\nin Sidama zone through integrated activities including agroforestry has been\nthe shared mission of Louis Dreyfus Company, the Louis Dreyfus Foundation and\nPUR Projet, a social business working with companies and communities to\nregenerate ecosystems they depend upon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Making coffee production sustainable is\nkey in this region where coffee accounts for 90 to 100%\nof household incomes. Thus, the project aims to increase coffee farmers’\nresilience to climate change through the regeneration of ecosystems, the\nadoption of good agricultural practices and the empowerment of coffee\ncommunities. It was designed in collaboration with the communities and includes\nan integrated set of activities to meet this objective: agroforestry, training\nsessions on good agricultural practices for coffee and the implementation of\nimproved cookstoves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agroforestry consists of planting trees for\nshade within and around coffee plots to protect crops from the sun, diversify\nfarmers\u2019 revenues and provide many other positives for the ecosystem, such as\nadaptation to and mitigation of climate change and droughts, reducing erosion,\nretaining water and preserving soils. Assisted by technical experts, farmers rapidly\ntook ownership of the program: they chose and planted native and fruit trees\nand cared for them to maintain them alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Training sessions on good agricultural\npractices, including training on agroforestry, contribute to regenerating\ncoffee ecosystems and to maintaining coffee yields and quality. Finally, the use\nof improved cookstoves helps fight against deforestation in the region, saving\naround 50% of the fuelwood used for daily cooking and thereby reducing\nemissions. It also reduces women\u2019s workload related to cooking, allowing them to\ntake advantage of other project activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building on this success in Ethiopia, the\nproject was extended to Uganda in 2018. Located in the Rwenzori region, the\nproject also includes agroforestry, training sessions on good agricultural\npractices as well as improved cookstoves. In addition to this, in 2020,\ninteractive theatre plays will be performed within the communities to raise\nawareness of best practices, support the scaling up of activities and help empower\nthe communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPrograms\nlike this one multiply positive outcomes relating to soil, water, biodiversity,\nfarmer revenue and coffee quality. <\/em>The\nsocial capital gained enables households to avoid food insecurity during more\ndifficult seasons, which keeps the community healthy. We expect the project to benefit more than 10,000 people, and to have 529,000\ntrees planted by 2021, in both countries combined<\/em>,\u201d said Rozenn Kerviel, Global Sustainability Manager for Coffee\nat LDC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
