Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions

· Mastery of the safe operational capabilities of a dual lane barge uncovering / covering unit. · Operator must have sufficient ability to operate the uncovering / covering unit safely and productively in all conditions including high / low river conditions and inclement weather. · Operator must understand the overall barge unloading process sufficiently to perform duties as directed by the Unloader operator. · Operator must understand the operation of the barge winching system sufficiently to place cables on the barges and position the barges in the slip for uncovering / covering. · Operator must possess the ability to communicate directly with the fleet tug operator to position barges as they arrive in the slip and place the barge haul cables on the bow and stern kevel. · Operator must possess the ability to recognize and identify the various grains and grain by-products and communicate that information to the control room operator when the covers are lifted on each barge. Additionally the operator must have the ability to recognize first look characteristics such as out of condition product, previously discharged product or mixed grain and communicate condition to the control room operator. · Operator must possess the ability to communicate the operational status of the barge winching system to maintenance personnel. Further, the operator must have sufficient knowledge of the barge winching system to recognize deficiencies in the equipment including all cables and communicate those deficiencies to the maintenance group. · Operator must complete unload records for each barge accurately and completely. · Operator must take an active role in recognizing excessive emissions from the barge Unloader or ship loading spouts and notifying the Unloader operator. Operator must fully recognize hazards associated with a barge unloading operation and take appropriate steps to ensure they and all personnel working in the barge unloading operation adhere to safe operating rules and policies.

Education/Professional Certifications/Licenses

Basic qualifications:

· High School Diploma/GED

· Valid Driver’s License

· Ability to obtain TWIC card

 

Experience

Basic qualifications:

· 1 to 2 years in a marine terminal barge unloading operation required.

 

Preferred qualifications:

· 1 to 2 years actual Cover handling experience.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (including any physical demands)

The following are basic qualifications:

· Knowledgeable and experienced in the use of industrial barge cover handling equipment, overhead hoists with spreader bars, varying types of barge covers, and hand tools normally associated with a barge uncovering / covering operations.

· Must be able to climb stairs, ladders and walk extended distances up inclines.

· Must have ability to work from ladders and platforms at heights above 6’.

· Be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.

· Must be able to work in dusty conditions.

· Must be able to work frequently in inclement weather.

· Must be aware and attentive to surroundings which may include automatically starting conveyor belts, other moving machinery, overhead loads and vessel gangways on the dock.

· Must ensure environmental equipment for the unloading operation is functioning properly at all times.
