Louis Dreyfus Company is seeking an experienced Outside Superintendent to oversee daily outside operations at our Port Allen grain facility. This role is responsible for coordinating contract labor crews, supporting grain handling activities, promoting a strong safety culture, and ensuring effective communication between Operations, Maintenance, Safety, and the Control Room.

The Outside Superintendent plays a critical role in keeping operations running safely, efficiently, and on schedule while leading teams and supporting continuous improvement across the facility.

What You'll Do

Lead Outside Operations

  • Schedule, direct, and oversee outside labor crews supporting facility operations.
  • Coordinate staffing needs with labor contractors to ensure adequate labor coverage.
  • Supervise activities related to rail unloading, barge unloading, vessel loading, and other outside operations.
  • Work closely with Control Room Supervisors to coordinate daily operational priorities.

Coordinate Daily Work Activities

  • Identify facility housekeeping priorities and assign labor resources accordingly.
  • Coordinate bin cleaning activities and labor schedules.
  • Support planning and execution of rail, barge, and truck receiving activities.
  • Ensure outside operations are completed safely and efficiently.

Support Maintenance Execution

  • Partner with the Maintenance Superintendent to provide labor support for maintenance activities.
  • Help prioritize and schedule maintenance windows to minimize operational disruptions.
  • Ensure maintenance work is completed safely and effectively.

Champion Safety

  • Promote and enforce all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Provide coaching and guidance on safe work practices.
  • Lead toolbox talks and safety meetings.
  • Assist with safety training, permits, audits, and compliance activities.
  • Partner with the SHE team to maintain a strong safety culture.

Develop and Support Teams

  • Provide day-to-day leadership for barge unloading and vessel loading crews.
  • Mentor and train employees and new supervisors.
  • Foster teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement across the operation.

Facilitate Communication

  • Serve as a key liaison between Operations, Maintenance, Safety, contractors, and the Control Room.
  • Ensure clear communication and coordination across departments.
  • Support operational planning and problem-solving efforts.

Job Requirements (Identify minimum levels required.)

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required.

2 or 4 year college degree preferred

Valid TWIC card preferred.

 

Experience

Five years of experience in grain industry increasing responsibility in the areas of mechanical and electrical maintenance, grain handling, and supervision

Prior supervisory experience

Prior grain elevator management experience

Prior exposure to ILWU work force preferred

 

Knowledge/Skills/Licenses

Two plus years in operations supervision

Superior knowledge of OSHA, Food Safety, Grain Standards, and Environmental regulations

Demonstrated ability to manage change within the work force

Demonstrated skills of team building and conflict resolution

Effective communication (verbal, written, presentation) skills

Broad knowledge of industrial machinery, including preventive maintenance, repairs, and replacement equipment

Strong working knowledge of computer operations

Thorough understanding of plant operations

Understanding of electrical systems helpful

Working Conditions

Requires supervisor to be available 24 hours per day

Exposed to variations in temperature and weather

Requires climbing ladders and catwalks

Requires occasional lifting of objects weighing at least 50 pounds

Requires wearing safety equipment at times, including safety belts/harnesses and ear, eye, and respiration protection.

 

Employee Supervision

Supervises outside operations personnel, Laborers

 

Decision Making

Assists in establishing and maintaining facility budget

Sets labor requirements on daily basis

Can shut down plant machinery, systems, and operation
