Work Schedule

This role is anticipated to work Mon – Fri  with the expectation to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.

Purpose and Objective of Position

This position ensures all effluents discharged from the facility meets required regulatory and company standards by operating wastewater treatment equipment and coordinating with production teams. Responsibilities include testing and monitoring wastewater systems, maintaining safe and efficient operation, and following all safety procedures to protect personnel, equipment, and the environment.

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions

  • Maintain a clean and orderly work environment, eliminate safety hazards, and comply with all company safety rules, including proper use of PPE. Perform daily wastewater testing to ensure all discharges meet regulatory requirements.
  • Operate wastewater treatment plant equipment in accordance with approved procedures and best practices.
  • Respond to equipment alarms or malfunctions, investigate causes, and implement corrective actions.
  • Conduct routine inspection rounds and collect water samples from multiple locations for laboratory analysis.
  • Maintain accurate daily records, logs, and documentation of plant operations.
  • Record laboratory test results and prepare required reports.
  • Troubleshoot day-to-day process or equipment issues and recommend or implement improvements.
  • Support stormwater management through regular inspections, sampling, and reporting activities.
  • Participate in cross‑training and learn all tasks within the department to support operational flexibility.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Reports any issues to the Utilities Supervisor.
  • Provides general housekeeping to assure a safe and uncontaminated environment
  • Completes miscellaneous tasks as requested to facilitate the utilities needs, may include some maintenance work in process equipment.
  • Responsible of LOTO and operational assistance during maintenance activities.

Education/Professional Certifications/Licenses

Basic qualifications: 

  • High School Diploma
  • 4 years of experience working with industrial wastewater.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Education: 2-year or 4-year technical diploma or degree in chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology related field
  • Experience: Wastewater treatment plant operator license.  

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (including any physical demands)

The following are the basic qualifications:

  • Knowledge of industrial wastewater processes
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory procedures
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to learn and follow testing procedures.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with accuracy and prioritize workload.
  • Proficiency with spreadsheet and word processing software, (e.g., Excel and MS Word).
  • Strong mathematical skills.
  • Ability to work in a safe manner and follow all safety standards and procedures.

The following are the preferred qualifications:

  • Knowledge of quality programs such as ISO 9000.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.         

Equipment Used

  • Wastewater equipment and machinery with dials, gauges and controls
  • Standard laboratory equipment for water testing (titrations, analyzers, ovens, samplers)
  • Personal protective equipment as required.

Working Conditions

  • Continuous 24/7 plant operation with 8-10 hour or longer shifts, as well as evening and weekend call-in requirements when needed.  
  • Plant operations areas exposed to variety of temperatures and prevailing weather conditions. Regular exposure to gases, vapors, odors and hazardous chemicals.
  • Occasional exposure to areas with wet floors and high volume of noise.
  • Some stair climbing and heaving lifting is required. Work is sometimes above ground level.
  • Extensions of regular working hours are occasionally necessary to complete time-sensitive projects or to respond to emergencies/start-ups.

  • Is an active member of the facility SHE (Safety, Health, and Environment) Program
  • Comply with the laboratory safety program
  • Maintains good working knowledge of SHE policies, rules and procedures applicable to area of responsibility and adheres to all applicable requirements
  • Completes required initial and annual refresher trainings as assigned    
  • Shares in responsibility of maintaining the lab in an orderly and safe manner
  • Reports unsafe working conditions to Management as soon as practicable
  • This position is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug testing

Quality & Product Safety Responsibilities

  • Maintains good working knowledge of Quality and Product Safety policies, rules and procedures applicable to area of responsibility and ensures all applicable requirements are adhered to.
  • Ensures employees are provided required training for area assigned, and jobs and tasks prior to assigning work.
  • Ensures area of responsibility is maintained in orderly and product safe manner.
  • Ensure unsafe product working conditions are remedied as soon as practicable.

  • No direct supervisory responsibilities.

  • Works in a safe and efficient manner in the wastewater treatment plant
  • Accurately performs tests and records results
  • Works independently on routine duties but consults with supervisor on any problems or unusual test results
  • Follows established testing methodologies to ensure accuracy and repeatability of results
  • Communicate testing results to necessary parties to ensure quality and meet production standards
  • Comply with governmental and company policies, regulations, and standards to ensure compliance
