Overall Purpose & Objectives: 

The Commodity Handler is responsible for the efficient loading of dried distiller's grains, ethanol, corn oil, and wet cake into feed trucks and rail cars. This role involves the use of mechanical equipment including operating locomotives, meters, scales, computers, and software to ensure the accurate and timely delivery of products while maintaining product safety. Additionally, the Commodity Handler must adhere to all relevant Company policies and government regulations. 

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions:  

  • Load final products (DDGS, Ethanol, Corn Oil, wet cake) into trucks and railcars to ensure timely delivery of all handled products. 
  • Unload grain trucks and railcars as needed to meet the plant’s daily production schedules. 

  • Inspect material handling equipment and perform routine adjustments and minor maintenance as needed. 

  • Diligently watch and inspect the quality and grading of corn and grains.  

  • Operate rolling stock equipment to meet department needs such as locomotives, end loaders, RTV's, golf carts, skid loaders, etc. 

  • Comply with Company safety rules and wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required. 

  • Report any equipment issues to Shift Leaders in a timely fashion. 

  • Complete tasks as assigned by Management or Shift Leads. 

Additional Responsibilities: 

  • Ensure all department areas are kept clean and free from safety hazards which require regular bending and occasional lifting. 
  • Actively participate in Shift/Team activities including complying with best practices, standard operating procedures, development and maintenance, and continuous improvement efforts.

  • Accept/carry out/complete other duties as assigned by Commodities Manager. 

 

Education & Experience Requirements/Competencies:  

High School Diploma/GED 

  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and procedures.  
  • Must be able to be trained in Locomotive Operation and Rail Switching within 12 months.  
  • Complete Conductor Level 1 ground employee proficiency examination in 12 months.  
  • Complete Conventional Locomotive Operator Level 2 proficiency examination in 12 months.  
  • Completes Hazardous Materials shipping certification course.  
  • Must be able to pass all Commodity Handler 1 requirements within 3 months.  
  • Knowledge of locomotive operation and rail switching rules manual and rail safety.  
  • Knowledge of manufacturing regulatory and safety requirements (e.g., OSHA)  
  • Ability to operate machinery and computer systems while maintaining compliance with regulatory safety.  
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders as well as work at extended heights of up to 175 feet; manage confined space entry, withstand extended periods of walking and standing; move manufacturing materials, products and equipment of 50 pounds or more which requires regular bending and lifting.  
  • Mechanical aptitude, effective communication skills, basic math and fundamental PC skills.   

Hours:

This is an overnight position. 5:50P-6:00A (Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday) 

Working Conditions: 

Continuous 24/7 plant operation with shifts as assigned by the department manager to ensure the needs of the company are met, as well as off-shift call-in requirements when needed. Regular exposure to a variety of temperatures and prevailing weather conditions; regular exposure to gases, vapors, dust, and odors; occasional exposure to areas with wet floors and high volume of noise. Heavy lifting of manufacturing materials and products is required. The position requires regular stair climbing and extended periods of walking and standing in order to access and occasionally work in remote areas of the plant, heights and confined spaces. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be worn in compliance with Company standards and government regulations. Extensions of regular working hours are occasionally necessary to complete time-sensitive projects or to respond to emergencies.
