This in-person position is accountable to oversee all operations production equipment and supervising the work of a shift of production staff. Primary goal is to ensure quality products are produced in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with established production schedules and in compliance with all applicable Company standards and government regulations. Responsible for coordination of equipment availability for routine and repair maintenance and to maintain and update all logs and records related to work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for the production, safety, and quality of the team.
  • Operates production equipment and the computer control system to produce products such as ethanol, DDGS, wet cake, syrup, and others by such methods as slurry, liquefaction (enzymatic process), Fermentation (yeast process), centrifuge, evaporation, dryers, TOs, utility water systems, and other methods used in ethanol production. 
  • Conducts tests and makes decisions for the necessary adjustments to equipment in order to optimize plant efficiency and to comply with all applicable Company Standards and Government Regulations.
  • Completes regular checks of staff and equipment throughout the shift to ensure that standard operating procedures are followed.
  • Reports all shift production data results and any variance.
  • Reports all manufacturing equipment issues to Production Manager and/or maintenance staff.
  • Accountable for ensuring that established environmental procedures are followed and recordkeeping.
  • As directed by Production Manager, communicates the daily activities of shift staff and issues work assignments accordingly.
  • Maintains good working knowledge of SHE policies, rules and procedures applicable to area of responsibility and ensures all applicable requirements are adhered to. 
  • Ensures employees are provided required training for area and jobs and tasks prior to assigning work.  Ensures area of responsibility is maintained in orderly and safe manner. 
  • Promptly reports unsafe working conditions to management and communicates potential hazards to affected employees. 
  • Promptly reports all incidents to management and conducts incident investigation as soon as practicable; no later than 24 hours from time of incident.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the liaison between the Production Manager and production staff.
  • Reports any equipment malfunction issues to maintenance staff thru EPAC.
  • Assists Production Manager in the collection of shift productivity information.
  • Follows established procedures and recordkeeping requirements.
  • Coordinates production startups, shutdowns and changeovers.
  • Completes tasks as assigned by the Production Manager and/or Plant Manager.
  • As directed by Production Manager, performs job-related training with shift staff to increase efficiency and safety, as well as coaches shift staff on the Company’s performance expectations.
  • Accountable for setting and maintaining a positive leadership example for working safely.
  • Conducts initial investigation reports for safety and environmental accidents and near misses.
  • Accepts and performs other job duties as assigned.

Education/Professional Certifications/Licenses

Basic qualifications: High School Diploma/GED and Valid Driver’s License

Preferred qualifications: Technical degree or professional certification and Valid forklift certification

Experience

Basic qualifications:

  • Four years of production/processing experience.
  • Two years in a lead role in an industrial and minimum 1 year processing experience in our Company ethanol plant.

Preferred qualifications: Experience in the ethanol industry preferred

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (including any physical demands)

Basic qualifications:

  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, procedures and machinery, basic math skills and mechanical aptitude.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing regulatory and safety requirements.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders as well as work at heights, manage confined space entry, withstand extended periods of walking and standing; and move manufacturing materials, products and equipment of 50 pounds or more, which requires bending and lifting.
  • Proficiency with spreadsheet and word processing software (e.g., Excel and Word)

    Working Conditions

    Continuous 24/7 plant operation with 12-hour rotational shifts, as well as evening, weekend and holiday call-in requirements when needed.  Regular exposure to a variety of temperatures and prevailing weather conditions; regular exposure to gases, vapors, dust and odors; occasional exposure to areas with wet floors and high volume of noise. Heavy lifting of manufacturing materials and products is required. Position will require regular stair climbing and extended periods of walking and standing in order to access and occasionally work in remote areas of the plant, heights and confined spaces. Personal Protective Equipment will be worn in compliance with Company standards and government regulations. Call-ins or the extension of regular working hours are occasionally necessary to complete time-sensitive projects, attend training or to respond to emergencies.

    Employee Supervision

    Coordinates, monitors and assumes responsibility of the work of approximately 6 or more production employees in the industrial processing areas of an ethanol plant.  Has the authority to recommend hiring, firing, & discipline of employees as well as supervise, manage, & direct work.

    Decision Making/Accountability

    Operates equipment and machine controls for a dry mill ethanol plant.  Coordinates the work of production shift staff to meet daily production goals as directed.  Facilitates communications to and from plant management relating to the daily operations of the shift.  Participates in plant start-ups and shut-downs as directed.

    Is an active member of the facility SHE Program.  Maintains good working knowledge of SHE policies, rules and procedures applicable to area of responsibility and ensures all applicable requirements are adhered to.  Ensures employees are provided required training for area assigned, and jobs and tasks prior to assigning work.  Ensures area of responsibility is maintained in orderly and safe manner.  Ensures unsafe working conditions are remedied as soon as practicable.
