Overall Purpose and Objective of Position 

This position maintains and repairs operating equipment for a dry mill ethanol plant. Primary functions are to ensure that the machines and the computer control system for the plant remain in prime working order to optimize plant efficiencies. Also responsible for complying with all applicable Company standards and government regulations. 

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions 

  • Maintains and repairs operating equipment, including removal, installation, rebuilding, lubrication and cleaning of all equipment associated with the production process 
  • Fabrication & installation of piping and mechanical systems using various welding technologies 
  • Performs mechanical, instrumentation, pneumatic, and electrical work 
  • Works with plant operations to accomplish all tasks in a timely and safe manner
  • Learns plant process and procedures for plant start-up, shut down, cleaning and batching for better understanding of how equipment is utilized 
  • Complies with Company safety rules and wears proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required in fulfillment of assigned responsibilities
  • Maintains good working knowledge of Safety, Health, Environment (SHE) policies, rules and procedures applicable to area of responsibility and ensures all applicable requirements are adhered to. 
  • Performs all required Preventative Maintenance Tasks (PM's). Records all visual damage and mechanical problems that occur while on shift 
  • Ensures orderly shift change by communicating issues and/or ongoing tasks with incoming technicians, with the Scheduler/Planner and with the Operations Team 
  • Notifies Maintenance Manager of any production or safety problems 

Additional Responsibilities 

  • Ensures work area is kept clean and free from safety hazards 
  • Attends DNA maintenance, safety, benefits, and other meetings as required 
  • Completes tasks as assigned by the Maintenance Manager, Scheduler/Planner or Production Manager 

Education/Professional Certifications/Licenses 

Basic qualification: High School Diploma/GED 

Preferred qualifications: Technical degree or professional certification, Welding certification(s) or extensive experience. Experience in the ethanol industry. 

Experience 

The following is the basic qualification: 2 years of experience in welding, cutting, gearbox repair, pump alignment, material handling systems, preventative maintenance, and/or instrument and electrical work in an industrial processing facility or in a machine shop. 

The following is the preferred qualification: Experience in the ethanol industry, welding skills using various methods in the fabrication & installation of piping systems and/or other mechanical systems. 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (including any physical demands) - The following are basic qualifications: 

  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, procedures and industrial processing machinery 
  • Knowledge of manufacturing regulatory and safety requirements the facility operates under (e.g., OSHA, EPA, NDEQ, FSMA) 
  • Knowledge of and ability to operate computer control systems 
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Ability to give direction with respect to machine operation/repairs 
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders as well as work at heights, manage confined space entry, withstand extended periods of walking and standing, and move manufacturing materials, products and equipment of 50 pounds or more, which requires bending and lifting.

Equipment Used 

Production machinery and operating equipment, torches, welders, presses, variable hand tools, laser alignment tools, electrical testing tools, and Material Handling Equipment (Forklift, Payloader, Telehandler). Use of proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required. 

Working Conditions  

Continuous 24/7 plant operation with an 8.5-hour shift, as well as off-shift call-in requirements when needed. Shift rotation may be required to full business needs. Extensions of regular working hours are occasionally necessary to complete time-sensitive projects, attend training or to respond to emergencies. Frequent visits to industrial operations areas are necessary with exposure to variety of temperatures and prevailing weather conditions. Regular exposure to chemicals, industrial cleaning agents, gases, vapors, dust, odors and flammable liquids. Occasional exposure to areas with wet floors and high volume of noise. Heavy lifting of manufacturing materials and products is required. Position will require some stair climbing. Work is sometimes elevated above ground level to as high as 170 feet.

No direct supervisory responsibilities. 

Decision Making/Accountability 

Maintains and repairs machinery and controls for the production process of a dry mill ethanol plant. Follows supervisor's directions to ensure peak production efficiencies and product quality. Employs an understanding of Company standards and government regulations with respect to areas of responsibility to ensure ongoing compliance. Participates in plant start-ups and shut downs as directed.
