Overall Purpose & Objectives: 

The Commodity Handler is responsible for loading dried distillers grains, ethanol, and wet cake feed trucks and rail cars. Team members in this position use mechanical equipment, meters, or scales as well as computers and software equipment when loading products to ensure a timely delivery and product safety. Also responsible for complying with all applicable Company and government regulations. 

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions: 

  • Must be able to be trained in Locomotive Operation and Rail Switching within 12 months
  • Completes a Conductor Level 1 ground employee proficiency examination in 12 months 
  • Completes a Conventional Locomotive Operator Level 2 proficiency examination in 12 months
  • Must be able to pass all Commodity Handler 1 requirements within 3 months
  • Operates and inspects Locomotives and moves rail cars
  • Completes Hazardous Materials shipping certification course
  • Operates and inspects all equipment safely and rolling stock in inclement weather conditions
  • Understanding of the locomotive operation and rail switching rules manual and rail safety
  • Loads Ethanol into rail tank cars in order to ensure timely delivery of Unit Trains and Manifest
  • Loads DDGS into hopper cars in order to ensure timely delivery of Unit Trains and Manifest
  • Loads final product into trucks (Ethanol, DDGS, wet cake) in order to ensure timely delivery of products
  • Inspects material handling equipment and performs routine adjustments and minor maintenance as needed
  • Reports any equipment issues to the Commodity Manager or Team Leaders in a timely fashion
  • Unloads grain trucks and railcars as needed in order to meet the Plant's daily production schedule
  • Diligently watches and inspects the quality and grading of corn and grains
  • Complies with Company safety rules and wears proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required
  • Operates rolling stock equipment to meet department needs such as endloaders, RTV's, golf carts, skid loaders, etc.

Additional Responsibilities: 

  • Ensure all department areas are kept clean and free from safety hazards which requires regular bending and occasional lifting 
  • Complete tasks as assigned by the Department Manager and Plant Manager 
  • Actively participate in Shift/Team activities including complying with best practices, standard operating procedures, development and maintenance, and continuous improvement efforts 
  • Accept/carry out/complete other duties as assigned by Commodities Manager  

Education & Experience Requirements/Competencies: 

  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and procedures 
  • Must be able to be trained in Locomotive Operation and Rail Switching within 12 months 
  • Complete Conductor Level 1 ground employee proficiency examination in 12 months 
  • Complete Conventional Locomotive Operator Level 2 proficiency examination in 12 months 
  • Completes Hazardous Materials shipping certification course 
  • Must be able to pass all Commodity Handler 1 requirements within 3 months 
  • Knowledge of locomotive operation and rail switching rules manual and rail safety 
  • Knowledge of manufacturing regulatory and safety requirements (e.g., OSHA) 
  • Ability to operate machinery and computer systems while maintaining compliance with regulatory safety 
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders as well as work at extended heights of up to 175 feet; manage confined space entry, withstand extended periods of walking and standing; move manufacturing materials, products and equipment of 50 pounds or more which requires regular bending and lifting
  • Mechanical aptitude, effective communication skills, basic math and fundamental PC skills
  • High School Diploma/GED 

Working Conditions:

Continuous 24/7 plant operation with shifts as assigned by the department manager to ensure the needs of the company are met, as well as off-shift call-in requirements when needed. Regular exposure to a variety of temperatures and prevailing weather conditions; regular exposure to gases, vapors, dust, and odors; occasional exposure to areas with wet floors and high volume of noise. Heavy lifting of manufacturing materials and products is required. The position requires regular stair climbing and extended periods of walking and standing in order to access and occasionally work in remote areas of the plant, heights and confined spaces. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be worn in compliance with Company standards and government regulations. Extensions of regular working hours are occasionally necessary to complete time-sensitive projects or to respond to emergencies.
