Overall Purpose and Objective of Position

This position oversees the maintenance and repairs of the operating equipment in the location. Includes receiving, material handling, soybean preparation/extraction, oil refinery, load out and auxiliary services processes. Primary functions are to ensure that the machinery and equipment in the plant remain in good working order to optimize plant productivity and efficiency. This position will be responsible for assuring all work is performed in compliance with all applicable Company standards and government regulations. Maintenance responsibilities will include project and outage work.

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions

  • Assists with planning, prioritizing, and directing the daily activities of maintenance staff to ensure the safe and efficient servicing of plant equipment
  • Completes regular checks of maintenance techs and equipment to ensure that standard operating procedures are followed, and Company standards are met at all time
  • Maintenance and repairs of operating equipment, including removal, installation, rebuilding, lubrication and cleaning of all equipment associated with the production process
  • Supervise basic instrument replacement and basic electrical work
  • Works with plant management to accomplish all tasks in a timely and safe manner
  • Learns plant general processes and procedures for plant start-up, shut down and operations for better understanding of how equipment is utilized
  • Notifies Maintenance Manager of any production, maintenance or safety problems
  • Ensures the Departments compliance with Company safety rules and verifies the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) as required in fulfillment of assigned responsibilities 
  • Assists in plans to maintenance budget to meet facility needs and production goals
  • Assists in planning and coordinating plant outages to minimize downtime and costs
  • Encourage team participation in maintaining a clean and organized workspace. Provide an injury-free work environment for employees, staff, contractors, visitors through engagement, JHAs, training programs, good maintenance practices, LDC standards/policies, and proactive elimination of exposures. Maintain and improve housekeeping in all areas. Implement and maintain 5S practices in the workplace. Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with 5S standards.

 

Reporting and Communication:

  • Maintains inventory of tools and supplies to ensure the efficient and continuous operation of plant equipment; requisitions spare parts as needed
  • Notifies the Maintenance Manager of potential safety hazards, equipment failures, operational inconsistencies and employee incidents
  • Assists with SAP BOLD Program Development and Implementation.
  • Utilize the SAP PM-MM program to keep plant equipment running at peak efficiency.

 

Training and Coaching:

  • Delivers job-related training to Maintenance staff to increase work efficiency and safety
  • Promote a culture of continuous learning and improvement. Establish group and individual accountabilities throughout all the employees at Maintenance area for safety leadership, problem solving and cost reduction. Facilitate team meetings to brainstorm and implement improvement ideas. Monitor progress and measure the impact of improvement initiatives.
  • Sets a positive leadership example for working safely, having on-going safety meetings and training courses.
  • Annual evaluation of the performance of Maintenance Technicians according to LDC Policies and Standards.

 

Additional Responsibilities

  • Promote the completion of accurate and timely work orders and notifications.
  • Drive Company utility vehicles as necessary to perform tasks assigned by plant management, which may include but not be limited to responding to plant or staff emergencies and or picking up, dropping off or transporting parts, equipment, instruments, supplies and other materials necessary to ensure that the machinery and equipment in the plant remain in good working order
  • Promote a safe and healthy work environment. Continually improve safety record by addressing both physical safety issues and employee safety attitudes. Enforce safety protocols and procedures. Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments.

Basic qualifications:

  • High school diploma

Preferred qualifications:

  • Technical degree or trade/mechanical training related to the operation and maintenance of industrial equipment.
  • Associate’s degree training related to the operation and maintenance of industrial equipment.

 

Experience

Basic qualifications:

  • Five (5) years of experience with welding, cutting, gearbox repair, pump alignment, material handling systems, preventive maintenance, and/or instrument and electrical work in an industrial processing facility or in a machine shop
  • Five years (5) of supervisory/management experience in the maintenance of industrial equipment is required.
  • Must have a strong record of successfully implementing effective preventative maintenance practices and procedures.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (including any physical demands)

The following are required:

  • Knowledge of electrical systems including Switch Gear, MCC’s, PLCs, Ladder Logic, and Instrumentation
  • Ability to perform all duties of position while maintaining compliance with regulatory safety requirements, e.g., OSHA, PSM, EPA, USDA, ISO 9000 and BQ-9000
  • Ability to read blueprints and/or other plant diagrams, electrical and equipment schematics
  • Ability to provide instruction with respect to computer control systems and machine operation/repair
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders as well as work at heights; manage confined space entry, withstand extended periods of walking and standing; move manufacturing materials, products and equipment of 50 pounds or more which requires regular bending and lifting
  • Mechanical aptitude, effective oral and written communication skills, basic math and fundamental PC skills
  • Must be well organized, self-motivated and action oriented and able to work effectively in a team environment
  • Complete annual performance evaluations of the Maintenance Technicians according to LDC Procedures.
  • Broad knowledge of maintaining plant equipment/industrial machinery is required
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Working Conditions

  • Will be scheduled to work to coincide with M&R Technicians schedules with expected overtime during project or downtime periods.  Regular exposure to a variety of temperatures and prevailing weather conditions; regular exposure to gases, vapors, dust, odors and flammable liquids; occasional exposure to areas with wet floors and high volume of noise. Heavy lifting of manufacturing materials and products is required. Position will require regular stair climbing and extended periods of walking and standing to access remote areas of the plant, heights and confined spaces. Personal Protective Equipment will be worn in compliance with Company standards and government regulations. Call-ins or the extension of regular working hours are occasionally necessary to complete time-sensitive projects, attend training or to respond to emergencies.

  • This position supervises a team of hourly maintenance personnel. Has the authority to recommend hiring, firing, & discipline of employees as well as supervise, manage, & direct work.
  • Approve time and monitor attendance within the tracking system.
  • Approve PTO in Workday for technicians and coordinate shift coverage.
  • Maintain good order and discipline according to LDC code of conduct and all LDC policies.

 

Decision Making/Accountability

  • Plans and controls the entire maintenance function of a soybean crushing plant.  Is accountable for the overall effectiveness and efficiency of plant operating equipment. Develops programs and policies to optimize the performance of plant operating equipment.  Plans and allocates the work of maintenance personnel to achieve daily production goals.  Investigates and resolves any operating equipment issues.  Initiates plant start-ups and shutdowns as needed.

  • Maintains good working knowledge of SHE policies, rules and procedures applicable to area of responsibility and ensures all applicable requirements are adhered to.  Ensures employees are provided required training for area and jobs and tasks prior to assigning work.  Ensures area of responsibility is maintained in orderly and safe manner.  Promptly reports unsafe working conditions to management and communicates potential hazards to affected employees.  Promptly reports all incidents to management and conducts incident investigation as soon as practicable; no later than 24 hours from time of incident.
