Inaugurated by the Haryana State Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, the center aims to train local farmers in new crop technologies and efficient irrigation methods.

GURUGRAM, India, 30 December 2018 – Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC) launched today a new farmer training and information center in Gurugram within the state of Haryana. Undertaken by LDC at the request of the District Horticulture Office, the newly constructed center aims to improve the livelihoods of over 10,000 local horticulture farming families by training them in new crop technologies and efficient irrigation methods with the potential to increase yields and incomes, while providing timely information relating to markets, weather, disease and pest control.

Thomas Couteaudier, LDC’s Head of South & Southeast Asia Region said, “LDC invests regularly in initiatives which support the wellbeing of local communities in which we operate across the globe. Because we believe that partnerships are key to sustainable development, we are delighted at this opportunity to work with the District Horticulture Office to empower farming families in Gurugram, where LDC is based in India. By providing a physical environment conducive to learning, we hope to contribute to improved livelihoods and more sustainable farming and trade for the local community.”

Dr. Deen Mohammad of the District Horticulture Office added, “The climate and soils in Gurugram provide fertile ground for a wide range of horticulture crops and local farmers enjoy access to nearby Delhi and Gurugram city markets. However, poor social and economic conditions, coupled with the lack of technical knowledge, have hindered the progress of local farming. We are heartened that LDC has readily responded to our district’s need for a training and information center which will contribute to the Honorable Prime Minister’s goal of doubling the income of farming families by 2022. The center will also support the development of soil and water resources, and provide a foundation for horticulture development in the region.”

Covering an area of approx. 1700 square feet, the Kisan Prashikshan Kendra Gurugram (or Gurugram Farmer Training Center) was constructed at a cost of US$80,000. Comprising a large event hall with the capacity to accommodate some 125 farmers, the center will be managed and run by the District Horticulture Office, which will conduct programs designed to encourage and propagate best horticulture farming practices, and provide quality seedlings and saplings to farmers.
