New facility boosts competitiveness and logistical efficiency of sugar exports
São Paulo, Brazil, August 21, 2025 – Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC), a leading global merchant and processor of agricultural goods and one of the world’s largest sugar merchants, today inaugurated its intermodal sugar terminal in Pederneiras, São Paulo State, Brazil. The investment is part of the company’s strategy to further strengthen its merchandizing capacity – in this case, by increasing sugar origination and export volumes – and to leverage logistical synergies with other operations, such as Grains & Oilseeds, boosting efficiency and enhancing customer service.
LDC’s terminal will become a new logistics hub for mills located in the country’s Center-South region, by enabling the flow of sugar production to the Port of Santos via rail, until now carried out almost exclusively by road.
Covering an area of approximately 120,000 m², with 14,000 m² of built areas, the facility includes a bulk warehouse with static capacity of 90,000 tons and able to handle at least 150,000 tons monthly. The site features a modern receiving and shipping system, including automated sampling, scales and conveyors, and is equipped to receive up to 6,000 tons of sugar daily in two shifts, and ship up to 8,500 tons daily by rail, for a total annual capacity of 1 million tons.
“The sugar terminal further reinforces LDC’s competitive edge, as it allows for strategic product storage, optimizes merchandizing activities during the harvest and offers an efficient road-rail logistics alternative. With the start of operations in Pederneiras, we will double our volumes of sugar transported by rail, which will reach 50% in the country,” says Guilherme Correia, LDC’s Head of Sugar for Brazil.
The Pederneiras terminal will be LDC’s Sugar Platform’s second logistics facility and will operate in synergy with Guarujá Sugar Export Terminal (Terminal Exportador de Açúcar do Guarujá – or TEAG), where the company operates through a joint venture. Recent investments in TEAG aimed to increase the site’s share of products received via rail, further strengthening the efficiency and integration of LDC’s logistics operations.
“The start of operations at Pederneiras terminal marks an important step in our logistics network. We have been active in grain handling in the region for 20 years, connecting waterway and railway flows, and are now expanding this scope with sugar operations. This will enable us to increase rail traffic and load trains with 80 wagons of grain and sugar combined on a daily basis. This integration between commodities increases the volume of grain sent to both Guarujá Export Terminal (Terminal Exportador do Guarujá – or TEG) and Santos Export Terminal (Terminal Exportador de Santos – or TES), as well as sugar volumes sent to TEAG, reinforcing our long-term commitment to the development of production chains and the flow of agricultural products we work with,” says João Paiva, LDC’s Global Head of Ports and Waterways.
