Bioenergy

Bioenergy is fuel made from renewable organic material. Our Grains & Oilseeds and Sugar business lines produce several bioenergy products and by-products.

Bioenergy and Sustainability

Biodiesel is a renewable fuel with high oxygen content that results in an improved combustion process, less soot and reduced deposits compared to conventional or fossil fuels, which makes it a more sustainable fuel alternative. It is estimated that biodiesel could replace up to 10% of the conventional diesel consumed worldwide.

Ethanol is used as an oxygenate additive for standard gasoline, as a replacement for methyl-t-butyl ether (MTBE), which is responsible for considerable groundwater and soil contamination. As a renewable energy source that is cleaner than petroleum fuels, fuel ethanol is therefore better for the environment.

As a by-product of the palm oil refining process, Palm Fatty Acid Distillate (PFAD) is defined as a ‘processing residue’ and not a primary end of palm processing. As such, PFAD itself does not increase pressure to expand palm cultivation, and diesel refined from PFAD can reduce greenhouse gas emissions from diesel-powered vehicles by up to 90% compared to conventional diesel.
