The Challenge
Conserve forests and other high conservation-value habitats, while meeting rising food and feed demand sustainably, despite diminishing arable land.
Action in 2020
- Coffee: Comprehensively restructured our supplier Code of Conduct, ran sustainability projects with 14,000+ beneficiaries and supported agroforestry projects in Indonesia, Ethiopia and Uganda.
- Cotton: Trained 41,000+ farmers in Zambia and 5,000 in India in sustainable agricultural practices, and increased year-on-year volume of Better Cotton purchased by 4%.
- Juice: Verified three more farms as Sustainable Agriculture Initiative Platform Gold grade, completed biodiversity protection and conservation plans for three additional farms; planted 49,000+ native seedlings and continued to promote good agricultural practices via ‘Programa Compartilhar’.
- Palm: Enforced our ‘No Deforestation, No Peat and No Exploitation’ (NDPE) policy across our supply chains, achieved 100% traceability to mill level for directly sourced palm and 96% for indirectly sourced palm and trained 1,000+ smallholder farmers in sustainable farming practices, including world’s first RSPO-certified independent smallholder group.
- Soy: Enforced our NDPE policy across our supply chains, reached 88% traceability to farm in Brazil for direct purchases, and mapped land use dynamics in Argentina and current sourcing profile in Paraguay.
