Santa Fe, Argentina, June 30, 2021 – As part of its global commitment to sustainable development, Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC) announced the installation of a new compost bin system at its port complexes in General Lagos and Timbúes, in order to improve waste management at source through a natural process, and thus reduce the environmental impact of its activities.
The new equipment consists of three composting modules installed in the refectories of both plants and is expected to reduce the daily volume of waste generated by 32%. It will also ensure that 100% of compostable organic waste (including the remains from tree and plant pruning at the sites) can be repurposed as a natural fertilizer for the green spaces at both facilities.
“The installation of the compost bins reduces waste generation at both plants by sorting waste at source and thus reducing the volume sent to landfills. It also reinforces our sense of purpose and community at General Lagos and Timbúes, as we make a collective effort to protect the environment in which we work and live,” said Diego Monella, LDC’s Environment Coordinator for South and West Latin America.
In addition to installing the equipment, the company ran workshops on recycling and composting to engage local workers and contractors in the program, to be continued in the coming weeks.
This initiative is part of LDC’s Strategic Environmental Plan 2020/2025 in Argentina, which aims to implement continuous improvement actions and indicators aligned with the company’s environmental objectives for the next five years. Waste management actions will be expanded to all LDC processing plants and warehouses in Argentina throughout 2021, and work will advance as part of a plastic waste disposal project in collaboration with local social welfare cooperatives and recyclers.
