The primary purpose of this role is to optimize the movement of grain and grain products by rail.  The role includes strategic planning, data-driven decision-making as well as coordination with rail carriers, internal stakeholders, and supply chain partners to ensure seamless transportation operations.  The analyst monitors and forecasts railcar needs, identifies bottlenecks, negotiates freight rates, and implements logistics solutions aligned with company goals. Additionally, the position supports continuous improvement initiatives, manages transportation risks, and ensures compliance with regulatory and safety standards to enhance overall supply chain reliability and customer satisfaction. 

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions 

  • Plans the transportation for sales and production needs, including scheduling shipments, load schedules and communicating service needs with suppliers.  
  • Administer railcar track and trace, including coordinating daily transportation needs and status reporting  
  • Develops private car fleet strategies including cross border and intercompany fleet synergies 
  • Review supplier service and rate tariffs; keep commercial team abreast of changes to tariff rates 
  • Quote freight rates to commercial team; analyze freight spreads for optimal execution and arbitrage opportunities.    
  • Negotiate special service requests and rate improvements with railroads. 
  • Coordinate rail service requirements with customer service representatives, account managers and other contacts with rail and other service providers.   
  • Oversee freight rate quotes, review, analysis and forecasting processes.   
  • Negotiate and dispute freight invoices and freight rates,  
  • Review customer orders, schedule, in-transit and shipments at destination with customers and railways, address performance issues and adjust schedules as required.  
  • Monitor outbound shipments to ensure timely delivery to customers and terminal destinations. 
  • Monitor inbound pipelines of railcar to match production and shipping requirements. 
  • Discuss service performance levels and needs with suppliers. 
  • Analyze, maintain and report KPI spreadsheets creating weekly and monthly transportation scorecards.   
  • Track and report carrier, supplier, pipeline and various other transportation performance KPIs. 
  • Review, process and dispute railway freight, supplemental and demurrage invoices.  
  • Discuss fleet needs, industry developments, strategy and maintain working relationships with railcar Lessors, report findings to management and work with teams to develop fleet strategy. 

Additional Responsibilities Functions 

  • Schedule trans-load services. 
  • Bad order car data reporting and uploading of industry data. 
  • Backup railcar billing and other logistics needs. 
  • Coordinate truck business when required. 
  • Key escalation contact with suppliers when service or contractual obligations are not being met.

    Education/Professional Certifications/Licenses 

    Required qualification: 

    • Bachelor Degree in Agriculture or Business preferred 

    Preferred qualification: 

    • Additional logistics training considered an asset  

    Experience 

    Basic qualification:  

    • 5 years minimum relevant experience working in a rail logistics capacity  

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (including any physical demands)

    • Advanced analytics, data management and problem-solving capabilities 
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
    • Proficiency with spreadsheet and word-processing software (e.g., Excel, Word, PowerPoint). 
    • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks to meet strict monthly deadlines. 
    • Proactively approaches job duties and potential problems. 
    • Detail oriented with strong organizational and documentation skills.
