Overall, Purpose and Objective of Position

This position maintains and repairs operating equipment for multiple dry mill ethanol plants. Primary function is to ensure that the electrical portions of all machines and computer control systems remain in good working order to optimize plant productivity and efficiencies. Maintenance responsibilities include project and outage work.  This position may also be responsible for programming PLCs (Programmable Logic Computers) and DCS (Digital Control System) which control the plant processes.

Also responsible for complying with all applicable Company standards and government regulations. 

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions

  • Performs instrument and electrical work as well as trains additional maintenance staff to safely conduct routing I&E tasks.
  • Maintains and repairs operating equipment, including removal, installation, rebuilding, lubrication, and cleaning of all equipment associated with the production process.
  • Works with plant operations to accomplish all tasks in a timely and safe manner.
  • Learns plant process and procedures for plant start-up, shut down, cleaning, and batching for better understanding of how equipment is utilized.
  • Complies with Company safety rules and wears proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required in fulfillment of assigned responsibilities.
  • Maintains good working knowledge of Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) policies, rules, and procedures applicable to area of responsibility and ensures all applicable requirements are adhered to. 
  • Performs all required Preventative Maintenance Tasks (PM’s). Records all visual damage and mechanical problems that occur while on shift.
  • Ensures orderly shift change by communicating issues and/or ongoing tasks with incoming technicians and Scheduler/Planner.
  • Notifies Maintenance Manager of any production or safety problems.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Ensures work area is kept clean and free from safety hazards.
  • Completes tasks as assigned by the Maintenance Manager, Scheduler/Planner or Production Manager

Education/Professional Certifications/Licenses/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

The following are the basic qualification: 

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 2 years of experience in welding, cutting, gearbox repair, pump alignment, material handling systems, preventative maintenance, and/or instrument and electrical work in an industrial processing facility or in a machine shop.
  • Knowledge of PLC, Instrumentation, Ladder Logic, MCC’s and Electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, procedures, and industrial processing machinery.
  • Ability to perform all duties of position while maintaining compliance with regulatory safety requirements, (e.g., OSHA (including PSM), EPA, USDA, ISO 9000, and BQ-9000).
  • Ability to read electrical and equipment schematics.
  • Ability to provide instruction with respect to computer control systems and machine operation/repair.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders as well as work at elevations up to 180 feet, manage confined space entry, withstand extended periods of walking and standing, move manufacturing materials, products, and equipment of 50 pounds or more which requires regular bending and lifting.
  • Mechanical aptitude, effective oral and written communication skills, basic math, and fundamental PC skills
  • Must be well organized, self-motivated, action oriented and able to work effectively in a team environment.

The following are the preferred qualifications:

  • Technical degree or professional certification. 
  • Journeyman’s electrical license and/or welding certificate. 
  • Experience in the ethanol industry, electronic experience with 4-20mmA controls, VFD & PLC programming, and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to program PLCs (Programmable Logic Computers) and DCS (Digital Control System) which control the plant processes.

Equipment Used

Production machinery and operating equipment, multiple hand tools, electrical & electronic testing tools, and Material Handling Equipment (Forklift, Payloader, Telehandler). Use of proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required.

Working Conditions

Continuous 24/7 plant operation with off-shift call-in requirements when needed.  Extensions of regular working hours are occasionally necessary to complete time-sensitive projects, attend training or to respond to emergencies.  Frequent visits to industrial operations areas are necessary with exposure to variety of temperatures and prevailing weather conditions.  Regular exposure to chemicals, industrial cleaning agents, gases, vapors, dust, odors, and flammable liquids.  Occasional exposure to areas with wet floors and high volume of noise.  Heavy lifting of manufacturing materials and products is required.  Position will require some stair climbing.  Work is sometimes above ground level.

Maintains and repairs machinery and controls for the production process of a dry mill ethanol plant. Follows supervisor’s directions to ensure peak production efficiencies and product quality. Employs an understanding of Company standards and government        regulations with respect to areas of responsibility to ensure ongoing compliance. Participates in plant start-ups and shutdowns as directed.
