Overall Purpose and Objective of Position
This position performs as a lead accountant for several business units and/or legal entitles for a regional office of an international agricultural commodity trading firm.
Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions
- Prepares monthly financial statements and supporting schedules for local management for multiple business units and/or legal entities.
- Prepares monthly reporting for global consolidation along with required comments and analysis for assigned business units and/or legal entities.
- Prepares and reviews monthly budget vs. actual variance reporting along with required comments and analysis.
- Prepares and reviews commercial margin analysis monthly, quarterly, and yearly.
- Prepares and analyzes capital expenditures budget vs. actual.
- Reconciles or reviews reconcilements for all accounts within business units general ledger.
- Reviews general ledger (G/L) accounts and compares them with various source documents to identify discrepancies and/or errors/omissions in the accounts payable/journal entry process.
- Oversees and supports the monthly contract reconciliations.
- Oversees and supports the calculation of daily profit and loss trading estimates for businesses.
- Performs daily/monthly quantity reconciliations for trading and plant activities.
- Responsible for the accuracy and completeness of the general ledger for the assigned business units and/or legal entities.
- Communicates with the other LDC offices or outside counterparties to resolve discrepancies.
- Creates, enters and posts journal entries to reconcile G/L accounts with source documents.
- Reviews work of any subordinates.
- Assists in the budget preparation and analysis.
- Assists in setting up the back office software for new locations and business lines.
- Follows company accounting policies and ensures they are enforced.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Supervises subordinates as assigned by management.
- Performs special projects, including preparing financial and management reports, preparing spreadsheets, retrieving data from systems, assisting with implementation of new systems and managing data.
- Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- Work together in a cooperative spirit to serve the best interests of the Company.
- Operate in a fully responsible manner and comply with the law and Company Policy.

The following are the basic qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related business discipline.
The following are the preferred qualifications:
- Advanced degree or CPA certification
- Experience with Microsoft Great Plains

The following are the basic qualifications:
- Five to eight years of general accounting experience, resulting in a solid understanding of accrual accounting, general ledger practices and GAAP compliance (experience must include responsibility for a wide variety of general accounting functions, including analyzing complex general ledger accounts, reconciling discrepancies, analyzing payables and resolving discrepancies in order to prepare financial and management reports.)
- Proficiency with spreadsheet and word-processing software, (e.g., Excel and MS Word) and various accounting systems/ databases.
- Experience with financial consolidation of multiple entities
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (including any physical demands)
The following are the basic qualifications:
- Knowledge of general ledger accounting practices and GAAP
- Strong analytical and organizational skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong documentation skills.
- Ability to analyze account variances and resolve discrepancies.
- Ability to work independently and propose solutions.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet strict monthly deadlines.
- Detail oriented.
- Proficiency with spreadsheet and word-processing software, (e.g., Excel, and MS Word) and various accounting systems/databases

- Typical office equipment: PC, telephone, fax machine, scanner, calculator.
Working Conditions
- Typical climate-controlled office environment. Extensions of regular working hours are occasionally necessary to complete time- sensitive projects, attend training or to respond to emergencies. Provides any other assistance as directed by supervisor; prioritize personal workload throughout the day to ensure meeting of strict deadlines.
Employee Supervision
- Supervises a team of Staff Accountants.
Decision Making/Accountability
- Utilizes knowledge of accounting and increasing knowledge of our accounts and systems to identify errors, omissions and discrepancies. Handles challenging and/or high volume accounts. Determines whether to make accruals or adjustments. Identifies sources of discrepancies and resolves with other LD offices or outside counterparties. Makes recommendations based on analysis. Responsible for accuracy of general ledger data. Ensures proper cost allocations and that proper approval are obtained for payments. Prioritizes workload throughout the month to ensure meeting of deadlines. Requires maintaining strict confidentiality of proprietary financial information.
