“We have and will continue in the future, to evolve, innovate and work together to create a better tomorrow. ”

I’m Yuran Dai, the Head of Asia for LDC’s Carbon Solution Platform.

What can we do to minimize carbon emissions in our operations?

In our production activities, we are improving our energy efficiency and using fewer fossil fuels, choosing green electricity and steam. In business travel, we’re also opting for cleaner transportation options, such as trains instead of planes, and choosing electric cars to reduce our carbon footprint.

How does the Carbon Solutions Platform serve LDC's vision of a safe and sustainable future?

Let me summarize LDC’s Carbon Solutions Platform work and vision in a few figures: two, three, four and five. "Two" refers to the two driving forces in our carbon solutions efforts: internal and external. The internal drive is LDC's self-awareness and own policies for sustainable development. For example, in March 2023, LDC pledged to reduce its carbon emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 33.6% by 2030, compared to 2022 levels. We’ve already made positive progress toward this goal - for example, by trialing biofuels in shipping or adopting solar power at our Tianjin plant. External drivers are primarily external policies - for example, China’s decarbonization goals that focus on carbon peaking, carbon neutrality, carbon trading and carbon finance policies, which will help us further reduce our GHG emissions. "Three" refers to the three dimensions of carbon solutions - height, breadth and depth. The combat against climate change is global, and so is the goal to decarbonize our economies. Regarding height, therefore, we need to stand high enough to treat carbon solutions from a global perspective, as key factors in building a safe and sustainable future. Breadth is to say that carbon solutions are a broad, profound social revolution. No industry or enterprise can be excluded from this change. And in terms of depth, we mean that applying carbon solutions is a revolution that affects the entire industrial chain. "Four" refers to four levers of decarbonization. The first lever is for enterprises to balance their short-term business operational costs and long-term vision. to run their business responsibly, wherever we are and in everything we do. The second lever is about safety. Everything we do to achieve carbon reductions, carbon peaking and carbon neutrality contributes to our aim of building safe food supply chains for all. The third lever is about the environment, because what nature has to offer is our privilege to use. And the fourth lever is about resources. Carbon resources could be a long-term value-added resource, as important as coal or natural gas were historically. And finally, “five” – because we believe that to advance more sustainable business activities takes five key qualities. The first is determination to achieve carbon peaking and carbon neutrality targets, and even going beyond these for a better future. The second is patience: carbon markets are relatively new, and we need to allow time and space for improvement. The third is confidence, recognizing carbon solutions as an inevitable direction for future development - in China and beyond. We need to embrace this new trend and overcome obstacles we may encounter along the way. Fourthly, we need to be united. Finding and applying carbon solutions requires the concerted efforts of society as a whole, thinking beyond borders to realize our collective climate goals. Last and most important is responsibility. Achieving carbon peaking and neutrality targets is a historic mission and responsibility, which individuals, companies and countries must take up for the benefit of both current and future generations, realizing decarbonization goals responsibly.

What does LDC's 50-year journey in China mean to you?

Over these past 50 years, we have, and will continue in the future, to evolve, innovate and work together to create a better tomorrow.
