Growth in NFC

Despite extreme drought conditions that reduced crop size by 16% in Brazil, not-from-concentrate (NFC) juice production increased by 66% year-on-year. Orange juice consumption remained high, driven mainly by NFC consumers in China, and in the US where we increased our market share in 2021.

Fleet Success

In its first full year of operations, our upgraded juice fleet validated the business case for investment in these more eco-efficient vessels, which transported citrus juices and by-products from Brazil to destination markets in Europe and North America with lower fuel consumption (down 70%) and shipping emissions (down 18% and 90% for CO2 and sulfur emissions respectively) per ton of product transported.

Driving increasingly sustainable juice production remained a priority for LDC in 2021, acting in our own operations and influencing our suppliers to adopt sustainable practices at their farms, in line with our supplier conduct manual. 50% of all fruit processed at our plants now follows the international sustainability standards of one or more certification entities, including the Rainforest Alliance, FSA/SAI Platform, Global GAP and/or Fairtrade, with plans to push up this number even further.

More Juice Highlights

With three more farms verified by the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (SAI) Platform in 2021, all 38 LDC-managed farms are now verified to SAI Platform standards (37 gold, 1 silver). 32 are also Rainforest Alliance CertifiedTM.

Through our ‘Compartilhar’ program, we continued to share knowledge of best agricultural practices through workshops that brought together participants responsible for 75% of the total volume of fruit we purchase from third party suppliers.

We initiated an ambitious review of all our production processes, aiming to save energy, increase efficiency, introduce automation, optimize costs and maximize product quality.

As we explore opportunities to diversify revenue streams, we signed an agreement to supply citrus peel to a new pectin production facility in Bebedouro, São Paulo State, Brazil.

We invested in new digital performance management software to avoid operational process deviations and facilitate root cause analysis of any issues.
